Tuesday's best: Adams, Long duel in Birmingham

July 12th, 2017

Spencer Adams and Grayson Long made up for a limited slate of Minor League games on Tuesday as the two hurlers engaged in a Southern League duel that saw Long and Mobile shut out Birmingham, 1-0.
Adams, the White Sox No. 12 prospect, was a tough-luck loser for Birmingham even though he set a career high with 12 strikeouts in 7 1/3 innings. Throwing 62 of his 99 pitches for strikes, he allowed one earned run on two hits while walking two. Overall, the 21-year-old righty has pitched to a 3.63 ERA with 89 strikeouts and 18 walks in 106 2/3 innings (17 starts) for the Barons.

Long, meanwhile, fired six scoreless frames, scattering three hits while walking one and striking out eight to match his season high. It was his first BayBears victory since May 26, snapping a streak of seven starts without a win.
That's not to say the Angels' No. 5 prospect hasn't been good of late, however. After Tuesday's strong performance, Long owns a 1.46 ERA with 25 strikeouts in 24 2/3 innings over his last five starts -- a stretch that has helped the 23-year-old right-hander lower his Double-A ERA to 2.97 through 78 2/3 frames (15 starts).
Providing the offensive support for Long was Angels No. 2 prospect Matt Thaiss, who went 1-for-4 with an RBI double in his Double-A debut. A first-round Draft pick in 2016, Thaiss was promoted to Mobile after hitting .265/.353/.399 with eight homers in 84 games with Class A Advanced Inland Empire.

The rest of the best performances from top prospects Tuesday
• Coming off of his impressive showing in the SiriusXM All-Star Futures Game, No. 86 overall prospect Ronald Acuna (Braves' No. 7) connected on his 12th home run in a 1-for-4 performance for Double-A Mississippi. The homer was the 19-year-old center fielder's ninth in 56 games with the M-Braves, during which he's hitting .318 with 18 steals.

D-backs No. 4 prospect plated three runs and went 2-for-4 to pace Double-A Jackson's offense in a win over Mississippi. The 22-year-old third baseman has opened the season's fourth month on a tear, posting a .389 average with four doubles and eight RBIs in 11 games.
Indians No. 5 prospect Nolan Jones doubled in his first at-bat and added an RBI single in his second trip to the plate en route to his third multihit game for Class A Short Season Mahoning Valley. The double was the fourth of the season for the 2016 second-rounder, who owns a .741 OPS through his first 19 games in the New York-Penn League.
• In his first game back since representing the U.S. in the SiriusXM All-Star Futures Game, Marlins No. 3 prospect Brian Anderson went 1-for-2 with two RBIs and two walks as Double-A Jacksonville edged Biloxi, 4-3. The 24-year-old third baseman is having a strong campaign in the Southern League, where he's hitting .256 with a career-high 14 homers and a vastly improved strikeout rate through 84 games.
• Marlins No. 13 prospect Albert Guaimaro extended his hitting streak to eight games in the Rookie Gulf Coast League with his second multihit performance of the season. The 18-year-old went 2-for-6 with a triple, two runs scored and a stolen base.
Twins No. 4 prospect lowered his ERA to 2.78 behind five scoreless innings for Double-A Chattanooga. He allowed two hits, walked one and struck out five, with 43 of his 63 pitches going for strikes in the outing. The 22-year-old righty has 91 strikeouts and just three home runs allowed in 90 2/3 innings (16 starts) this season.
