The Chicago White Sox have agreed to terms on a one-year, $3.5-million contract with second baseman Brett Lawrie and a one-year, $3.0-million contract with outfielder Avisail Garcia. The White Sox also declined to tender a 2017 contract to right-handed pitcher Blake Smith.
Garcia, 25, batted .245 (101-413) with 12 home runs, 51 RBI and 59 runs scored over 120 games with the White Sox in 2016. He ranked fourth in the American League with a .355 (33-93) average with runners in scoring position.
Lawrie, 26, batted .248 (87-351) with 22 doubles, 12 home runs, 36 RBI and 35 runs scored over 94 games last season, his first with the Sox after being acquired from Oakland on December 9, 2015. He was placed on the 15-day disabled list on July 27 (retroactive to July 21) with a strained left hamstring and did not play the rest of the season.
Smith, 28, spent the majority of the 2016 season with Class AAA Charlotte, going 3-1 with a 3.53 ERA (28 ER/71.1 IP) and 75 strikeouts over 39 relief appearances. He made his major-league debut in September, posting a 6.23 ERA (3 ER/4.1 IP) over five appearances with the White Sox.
Smith was acquired from the Dodgers on May 22, 2015 in exchange for left-hander Eric Surkamp. He was selected by San Diego in the Rule 5 Draft on December 10, 2015 but returned to the Sox on March 27, 2016.
All remaining unsigned White Sox players have been tendered contracts for the 2017 season. The Sox 40-man roster decreases to 38.
