The Chicago White Sox have agreed to terms with left-handed pitcher Derek Holland on a one-year, $6-million contract and have designated left-hander Matt Purke for assignment.
Holland, 30, went 7-9 with a 4.95 ERA (59 ER/107.1 IP) and 67 strikeouts over 22 games (20 starts) with Texas in 2016. The 6-foot-2 and 215-pound Holland opened the season in the starting rotation, going 3-1 with a 2.48 ERA (8 ER/29.0 IP) in April before being placed on the disabled list on June 22 with left shoulder inflammation.
"Derek gives a veteran, left-handed presence for our starting rotation with a proven track record of pitching well in big games," said Rick Hahn, White Sox senior vice president/general manager. "This move provides us with additional depth and flexibility in the rotation."
In eight major-league seasons, all with the Rangers, Holland has gone 62-50 with a 4.35 ERA (476 ER/985.0 IP) and 790 strikeouts over 179 games (158 starts). From 2011-13, he ranked among the American League leaders in complete games (T8th, 6), winning percentage (9th, .644), wins (10th, 38), starts (T10th, 92), and IP (12th, 586.1).
Holland's best season came in 2011 when he went 16-5 with a 3.95 ERA (87 ER/198.0 IP) and 162 strikeouts over 32 starts, tying for the AL lead in shutouts and tying for fourth in wins and complete games (four). He set career bests in 2013 with a 3.42 ERA, 33 starts, 213.0 IP and 189 strikeouts.  
Holland has pitched in 14 career postseason games (five starts), going 3-1 with a 5.02 ERA (21 ER/37.2 IP). He earned the victory in Game 4 of the 2011 World Series vs. St. Louis, limiting the Cardinals to two hits over 8.1 scoreless IP.
Holland originally was selected by the Rangers in the 25th round of the 2006 draft.
Purke, 26, spent most of the 2016 season with Class AAA Charlotte, posting a 3.52 ERA (15 ER/38.1 IP) over 26 appearances (one start). He also made his major-league debut with the White Sox, going 0-1 with a 5.50 ERA (11 ER/18.0 IP) over 12 relief appearances.
The White Sox 40-man roster remains at 40.
