Covey, Polo, Foster among White Sox AFL crew

MINNEAPOLIS -- Seven White Sox prospects will take part in the 2017 Arizona Fall League, with rosters officially announced Tuesday afternoon.
Right-handed pitchers Matt Foster, Connor Walsh and , left-handed hurler Jacey Fry, catcher Seby Zavala, infielder Danny Mendick and outfielder Tito Polo make up the group on the Glendale Desert Dogs' roster. Matt Zaleski, the current Class A Kannapolis pitching coach, will serve as one of Glendale's pitching coaches.
Covey was a Rule 5 Draft selection from the A's in the Major League portion of the Draft at the Winter Meetings in December and posted a 0-4 record with an 8.12 ERA over eight starts for the White Sox. He was placed on the disabled list on May 26 with a strained left oblique, went on an injury rehab assignment with Triple-A Charlotte and was reinstated from the DL on Aug. 15.

"We are trying to get him a few more innings," White Sox manager Rick Renteria said. "Continue to command the zone. Continue to develop and use what we considered to be a really good sinker."
Covey, who is currently working out of the White Sox bullpen, last pitched on Aug. 21 against the Twins. He allowed three runs on four hits in 4 2/3 innings of work. Covey participated in the Arizona Fall League last season, which proved to be crucial to his joining Chicago.
"I look it as a good thing. It means they want me to be a starter," Covey said. "I'm kind of looking forward to it. It was a good experience last year; it's what got me to the White Sox. It's an extra six weeks of baseball, but it's also going to get me ready for next season."
Polo, who recently turned 23, was part of the seven-player trade sending , Tommy Kahnle and to the Yankees. He's hitting .278 with seven RBIs and seven stolen bases for Double-A Birmingham.
Zavala, selected in the 12th round of the 2015 MLB Draft out of San Diego State, has a combined 21 home runs and 71 RBIs between stops this season at Kannapolis and currently at Class A Winston-Salem. Foster, 22, has 31 strikeouts, five walks and 13 hits allowed over 26 2/3 innings, with a combined 0.68 ERA at Winston-Salem and Kannapolis.
Walsh, 24, has made nine appearances for Charlotte after posting a 3.19 ERA and .166 average against for Double-A Birmingham. Fry, 24, was considered a big league bullpen component but missed the 2016 season while working his way back from a second Tommy John surgery (with first coming in 2012 while at Oregon State). He has 49 strikeouts over 41 2/3 innings for Birmingham this season.
Mendick, 23, was a 22nd-round selection in the 2015 Draft. He is hitting .258 with 37 extra-base hits and 12 stolen bases between stops at Birmingham and Winston-Salem.
The league has a total of six teams, with five organizations represented on each. Every MLB team is required to send at least six players from its organization.
Glendale opens play at Peoria on Oct. 10.
