The Chicago White Sox today announced the following five roster moves:
• Declined the $3-million club option for 2017 on the contract of right-handed pitcher Matt Albers, opting instead to exercise a $250,000 buyout, which makes Albers a free agent.
• Reinstated third baseman Matt Davidson and right-handed pitcher Jake Petricka from the 60-day disabled list.
• Outrighted outfielder J.B. Shuck to Class AAA Charlotte.
• Released right-handed pitcher Daniel Webb.
Albers, 33, went 2-6 with a 6.31 ERA (36 ER/51.1 IP) and a career-high 13 holds over 58 appearances (one start) in 2016, his second season with the White Sox. Davidson, 25, was placed on the 15-day disabled list on July 1 with a broken right foot suffered while running the bases on June 30 vs. Minnesota and was transferred to the 60-day disabled list on July 17. He hit .268 (76-284) with 20 doubles, 10 home runs, 46 RBI and 35 runs scored over 75 games with Charlotte in 2016 and was named to the Triple-A All-Star Team.
Petricka, 28, went 0-0 with a 4.50 ERA (4 ER/8.0 IP) over nine relief outings in 2016 before being placed on the disabled list on May 5 (retroactive to May 2) with a right hip impingement. He was transferred to the 60-day disabled list on July 6. Petricka has gone 6-10 with a 3.31 ERA (56 ER/152.1 IP) and 16 saves in 154 relief appearances over four seasons with the White Sox (2013-16).
Shuck, 29, hit .205 (46-224) with five doubles, two triples, four home runs, 14 RBI and 27 runs scored over 80 games with the White Sox in 2016. He was a .229 hitter (84-367) with 13 doubles, four triples, four homers and 29 RBI in 159 games over two seasons (2015-16) with Chicago after being claimed off waivers from Cleveland on November 3, 2014.
Webb, 27, appeared in just one game with Chicago in 2016 before undergoing season-ending surgery on his right elbow in June. He went 7-5 with a 4.50 ERA (55 ER/110.0 IP) in 94 relief appearances over four seasons (2013-16) with the White Sox after being acquired from Toronto on January 1, 2012.
