White Sox announce five roster moves

BALTIMORE – Prior to today’s series finale at Baltimore, the Chicago White Sox purchased the contract of infielder Jose Lopez from Class AAA Charlotte, placed catcher Tyler Flowers on the Paternity Leave List, purchased the contract of catcher Hector Gimenez from Charlotte, transferred right-handed pitcher Brian Bruney to the 60-day disabled list and released right-handed pitcher Gregory Infante.

Lopez, 28, signed a minor-league contract with the White Sox on August 14 after being designated for assignment by Cleveland on August 12.  He hit .306 (15-49) with a homer and 10 RBI over 13 games with Charlotte this season.

The 6-foot, 205-pounder is a career .262 (1,000-3,818) hitter with 92 homers, 480 RBI and 419 runs scored in 1,021 games over nine major-league seasons with Seattle (2004-10), Colorado (2011), Florida (2011) and the Indians (2012).  Lopez, a 2006 American League All-Star selection, has played all four infield positions in his career.  He will wear uniform No. 18.

Flowers, 26, is expecting the birth of his first child.  He is eligible to come off the paternity list after one day but can be on for as many as three.  Flowers is batting .237 (27-114) with a career-high six home runs and 10 RBI over 41 games this season.

Gimenez, 29, is hitting .259 (97-375) with 24 homers and 57 RBI in 99 games with the Knights this season.  The 5-foot-10, 225-pounder has thrown out 43.1 (22-51) percent of attempted basestealers.  The switch-hitting catcher has appeared in six major-league games with Houston (2006) and Los Angeles-NL (2011).  Gimenez will wear uniform No. 38.

Bruney, 30, has been on the disabled list since June 29 (retroactive to June 25).  He underwent season-ending surgery on August 13 to repair and debride the labrum in his left hip.

Infante, 25, has gone 21-24 with a 3.79 ERA (173 ER/410.1 IP) in 180 games (45 starts) over seven seasons in the White Sox organization.  He appeared in five games with Chicago in 2010, working 4.2 scoreless IP.

With the moves, the White Sox 40-man roster is at 40.
