NEW YORK -- Despite trailing for the majority of Tuesday's contest, the White Sox claimed a 6-4 victory over the Mets and snapped their seven-game losing streak, thanks to a go-ahead two-run homer from infielder Tyler Saladino in the eighth inning.
"Never try for that," said Saladino of the homer. "You try for it, and it doesn't happen. Got lucky."
Mets left-hander Steven Matz kept Chicago scoreless through five innings, but he began to unravel in the sixth, starting with a two-run home run off the bat of Todd Frazier. Catcher Dioner Navarro added another run with a single before the inning was over, prompting the Mets to go to the bullpen. Matz's 5 2/3 innings marked his shortest start of the season since he went 1 2/3 on April 11, and it was the first time in three starts he didn't reach the seventh inning. The home run by Frazier ended a stretch of 16 straight scoreless innings for the White Sox offense.

"Again, it's the way they keep fighting back," White Sox manager Robin Ventura said. "You're down 4-0, I think a lesser group rolls over and just gives up, and they won't do that."
The White Sox had no answer for right-hander Noah Syndergaard, who put together a scoreless seventh inning in his first career regular-season relief appearance. Second baseman Neil Walker's third-inning two-run homer off White Sox starter Mat Latos wasn't enough of a cushion for the Mets, though, as Saladino took right-hander Hansel Robles deep to take the lead, and Brett Lawrie added an RBI single for insurance to seal the win.

"It was frustrating," Robles said through an interpreter. "I was trying to do my job and go out and throw zeros across the board, but that occurred."

MOMENTS THAT MATTERED
Back-to-back: Walker's third-inning rocket into the right-field seats, which gave the Mets a 4-0 lead, marked his second homer in as many days. Prior to Monday's blast, though, the second baseman was in the midst of a power outage. After smashing nine dingers in April, Walker had just two home runs in May entering this series.
Frazier's give and take: Two of the four runs scored off White Sox starter Mat Latos, who went five innings, were unearned -- with third baseman Frazier committing an error in the first on a missed catch and an error in the second on a bad throw. But Frazier got those runs back in the sixth, when he crushed a first pitch from Matz for his 16th home run with Jose Abreu on first base.

Can't touch this: Syndergaard emerged from the bullpen amid a raucous ovation to pitch the seventh inning. Syndergaard, who was ejected after 2 1/3 innings Saturday after buzzing a 99-mph fastball behind Dodgers second baseman Chase Utley, struck out two of the four batters he faced in an electric scoreless inning. Stealing a run: The White Sox scored three runs in the sixth inning off Matz, ending a streak of 16 scoreless innings. But the third one basically belonged to Saladino, who walked, swiped second and third and came home on Navarro's single to left. Saladino's lead on his steal of third was so significant that the crowd audibly gasped as he took off.

The four stolen bases by the White Sox marked the most for the team in a game since Aug. 6, 2011, at Minnesota. They also swiped four in that game.
UPON FURTHER REVIEW
Lawrie originally was ruled out attempting to steal second, which would have ended the seventh with Frazier at the plate. But Ventura used his manager's challenge, and video replay quickly overturned the call. Frazier struck out swinging on a full count offering to end the frame.

White Sox:Miguel Gonzalez (0-1, 4.50 ERA) makes his sixth start for the White Sox this season in Wednesday's 12:10 p.m. CT series finale against the Mets. Gonzalez has quality starts in each of his last two outings and will face the Mets for the first time.
Mets:Jacob deGrom (3-1, 2.81) hopes to help the Mets claim the rubber game Wednesday at 1:10 p.m. ET. deGrom pitched seven innings Friday, accruing seven strikeouts against three walks and three hits, allowing one run, in a Mets win.
