Eaton goes all out to make diving catch

KANSAS CITY -- Adam Eaton didn't want to talk much about his spectacular, run-saving catch following the White Sox 4-1 loss to the Royals on Thursday afternoon at Kauffman Stadium.

So John Danks, the starting pitcher he helped, handed out the plaudits instead.

"That's as good of a play as I've ever seen," Danks said. "Hats off to him. He saved a run there. That's Eaton. That's what we expect to see. Maybe not that spectacular every time, but he's a [heck] of an outfielder and I'm glad he's behind me."

Eaton saved at least one run by snagging Mike Moustakas' line drive with two outs in the fifth. Paulo Orlando, the Brazilian who began his career as part of the White Sox organization, opened the frame with a triple to left-center off of Danks.

He was stranded there when Omar Infante and Alcides Escobar hit weak popups, but Moustakas connected on a drive similar to one that cleared Eaton on Wednesday night. On this occasion, Eaton raced back and made a leaping, sprawling catch to end the inning.

"The way the wind was blowing you didn't know if it was carrying or if it was knocking it down," said White Sox manager Robin Ventura of Eaton's play. "Those guys in the outfield were trying to get a read on it. He basically outran it."

Lorenzo Cain, the Royals' center fielder, took extra bases away from Adam LaRoche leading off the second with a leaping catch against the right-center field wall. Cain also robbed Micah Johnson in the third by making a running catch near the center-field wall.

To supplement Cain's effort, the Royals completed the three-game sweep and dropped the White Sox to 0-3 to start a season for the first time since 2003. It's understandable that Eaton wasn't in a celebratory mood postgame.

"It's a great play, whatever," Eaton said. "But it's what you're supposed to do."
