White Sox deal Gillaspie to Angels for cash
Third baseman, DFA'd Sunday, could boost Halos' infield after Freese injury
CLEVELAND -- The White Sox traded Conor Gillaspie to the Angels in exchange for cash considerations, the teams announced Friday.
Gillaspie, 28 was designated for assignment by the White Sox on Sunday to make room for right-handed reliever Matt Albers' reinstatement from the disabled list. The left-handed-hitting third baseman, who also can play first base, hit .237 with 11 doubles, one triple, three home runs and 15 RBIs over 58 games and 173 at-bats in his third season with the White Sox. He split time at third base earlier this year with Gordon Beckham, but the job has since gone to rookie Tyler Saladino.
With the Angels' David Freese sustaining a non-displaced fracture on the tip of his right index finger on Wednesday night, Gillaspie can provide help at third. Gillaspie struggled defensively at the position this season, though, committing 12 errors and posting an .890 fielding percentage.
