Abreu gets ring from Reinsdorf for cycle

September 29th, 2017

CHICAGO -- White Sox chairman Jerry Reinsdorf presented a special ring to prior to Thursday's 5-4 victory over the Angels in the home finale for the 2017 season, commemorating Abreu becoming the sixth player in franchise history to hit for the cycle.
The accomplishment took place on Sept. 9 against the Giants, when Abreu completed the cycle by tripling to right-center during his last at-bat in the eighth inning. He joined Jack Brohamer, Carlton Fisk, Ray Schalk, Chris Singleton and Jose Valentin on this exclusive list. The ring presented to Abreu featured the same design as the one given to Singleton in 1999 and Valentín in 2000.
"It was a big honor for me," said Abreu through interpreter Billy Russo. "Jerry is an exceptional person. He was the one who signed me here.
"He was the one who gave me the opportunity to make my mom's dream come true. And I know that she has to be very happy right now with all the ceremony and all the things I've been doing this year and accomplished this year. It was very special for me."

When asked if he was surprised when Reinsdorf came looking for him in the clubhouse Thursday, Abreu smiled and said "Yes."
With his 102 RBIs this season, Abreu joined Los Angels first baseman and Yankees Hall of Famer Joe DiMaggio as the only three players in Major League history to begin their careers with four or more consecutive seasons of 25-plus home runs and 100-plus RBIs. Before Thursday's game, Abreu and Pujols were honored on the field for this achievement and exchanged signed bats.
Pujols has been a mentor to Abreu since he arrived in the Majors prior to the 2014 season.
"He's an outstanding player but a great person too," said Abreu. "I've been following him since I was in Cuba because I was hearing about him and I have the opportunity to meet him here and he has treated me in a special way. He has been like a mentor for me and our relationship is a very, very good relationship.
"It's special when you have the opportunity to be around a special person like him. I just can say I'm blessed."
