Ventura loses replay challenge in ninth inning

White Sox manager hoped to end game with double play

DETROIT -- The White Sox 7-4 victory over the Tigers on Thursday afternoon at Comerica Park almost came to a close via a replay challenge.

With Jake Petricka on the mound trying to finish off his sixth save, Victor Martinez hit a ground ball that second baseman Gordon Beckham turned into a force at second base. The relay throw from shortstop Alexei Ramirez to first baseman Jose Abreu was close, but first-base umpire Todd Tichenor called Martinez safe.

Robin Ventura issued a manager's challenge, and the call stood following a replay review. Television replays seemed to show Martinez was out at first, sending a plethora of Tigers fans to the exits before the umpires made their official call. Petricka then retired Torii Hunter on a ground ball to Ramirez to end the contest and give the White Sox a series win.
