New White Sox Kopech fans 10 in Double-A debut

April 9th, 2017

White Sox No. 3 prospect Michael Kopech (No. 15 overall) made a memorable debut with his new organization after being acquired in the December deal that sent Chris Sale to the Red Sox. The 20-year-old right-hander struck out 10 over 4 1/3 innings for Double-A Birmingham against Jackson on Saturday night.
Kopech allowed a solo homer in the second inning and an RBI double in the third, but he was otherwise overpowering. He struck out the side in the second, third and fourth frames, marking his fifth double-digit strikeout performance in his career -- this one coming in his first taste of Double-A ball.

Kopech reportedly was sitting at 98 mph on his fastball during most of the outing, and at one point hit 102 mph. He gave up just the two runs on three hits (including a home run), walking two.

Another top White Sox pitching prospect, Lucas Giolito (White Sox No. 2, No. 10 overall) also made his debut for the organization, allowing five runs (four earned) on six hits, walking two and striking out four over 4 1/3 innings in a start for Triple-A Charlotte. Chicago acquired Giolito from the Nationals over the offseason in the trade that sent outfielder Adam Eaton to Washington.
