CHICAGO -- White Sox right-hander Dylan Covey was placed on the 10-day disabled list with a strained left oblique prior to Friday's homestand opener with the Tigers, and right-handed pitcher Juan Minaya was recalled from Triple-A Charlotte.
The move left the White Sox operating with nine relievers and three position players off the bench. Minaya, 26, had a 1-0 mark and a 1.23 ERA with 11 strikeouts in 14 2/3 innings for the Knights. He was sidelined in Spring Training by a right abdominal strain and started 2017 on the disabled list.  
"I took a little while," said Minaya of his comeback to full health. "But we're going through the process, and we have to be patient and do everything they say to get healthy."
Covey, 25, left his last start on Tuesday at Arizona after 2 1/3 innings, after missing all but six games last season with the same injury. He is 0-4 with an 8.12 ERA over eight starts this season, his first in the Majors after being claimed from Oakland in the Rule 5 Draft.
"Well, my first thought was, 'Oh, no. I did it again,' and it's kind of looking like it might not be nearly as bad as it was last year," Covey said. "So I'm staying optimistic and taking it day by day.
"If I tried to push it another pitch like I did last year, it could have maybe worsened the situation. So I'm glad I was able to hold back a little bit."
Shields close to rehab start
James Shields threw a 30-pitch bullpen session Friday, marking his second successful session in three days. The right-hander, who is on the disabled list with a right lat strain, hopes to throw a simulated situation three-inning bullpen session on Monday and then go on a rehab assignment for maybe one or two starts.
"I tried to get after it a little my first bullpen [session] but I wasn't as efficient with my pitches," Shields said. "It's more of a pitcher thing. But body felt great both times and I only had one day off in between. It went really well.
"Just getting innings in, really, those are the last steps. I'm full bore. Everything is working really well and everything feels good. Ready to rock and roll. It's been pretty tough for me. I'm pretty anxious. I want to be out there and help my team win."
Moncada returns 
Yoan Moncada was activated from Charlotte's disabled list Friday after being placed on the seven-day DL retroactive to May 16 with a left thumb bone bruise. The No. 1 prospect overall per MLBPipeline has a .331 average with 27 runs scored and 10 stolen bases.
No sinking feeling for Danish
If Tyler Danish, the starting pitcher in Game 2 of Saturday's doubleheader, throws a complete game against the Tigers with no strikeouts, the sinkerball pitcher won't have any issues.
"You are going to give up hits as a sinkerballer," Danish said. "It's bound to happen. That's where I've grown and being confident and knowing to trust it. I give up two hits and I get two ground balls, I'm out of the inning real quickly."
