Prospect Johnson proving 2013 wasn't a fluke
White Sox No. 4 prospect reaches base five times, steals three bases
Micah Johnson had a breakout season in 2013, playing across three levels and leading the Minor Leagues in stolen bases in his first full season. The second baseman is now showing everyone it was far from a fluke.
The No. 4 prospect on the White Sox Top 20 list got on base all five times (2-for-2, three walks) for Double-A Birmingham against Tennessee on Saturday. He also stole three bases, doubling his season total.
Despite the somewhat slow start, Johnson is still tied for third in the Southern League with his six stolen bases. Thanks to a nine-game hitting streak, including eight hits in his last 12 at-bats (spanning three games), Johnson has upped his batting average to .377, currently second in the circuit. His .472 on-base percentage is also second in the league and he stands fourth with his .557 slugging percentage.
In 2013, Johnson began the year in Kannapolis and the Class A South Atlantic League, but earned a promotion up a level after hitting .342 with 61 steals in 77 games. Johnson hit .275 and swiped 22 more bags in the Carolina League before helping Birmingham win the Southern League title.
Johnson was taken by the White Sox in the ninth round of the 2012 Draft out of the University of Indiana after falling on Draft boards because of an elbow injury.
