Prior to tonight's game at Yankee Stadium, the Chicago White Sox purchased the contract of left-handed pitcher Matt Purke from Class AAA Charlotte and requested waivers on left-hander John Danks for the purpose of granting him his unconditional release. Purke will take the roster spot of right-hander Scott Carroll, who yesterday was optioned to Charlotte.
Purke, 25, has gone 0-0 with a 2.30 ERA (4 ER/15.2 IP) and 14 strikeouts over 10 appearances (one start) with Charlotte this season. He has limited left-handers to a .111 (1-9) average in 2016, while opponents are just 1-10 (.100) with RISP/two outs. Purke has no major-league experience and will wear uniform No. 64.
Purke, 6-foot-4 and 215 pounds, is 10-18 with a 4.62 ERA (111 ER/216.1 IP) and 175 strikeouts in 59 appearances (45 starts) over five seasons in the Washington (2012-15) and Chicago (2016) organizations. He originally was selected by the Nationals in the third round of the 2011 draft. Purke was signed by the White Sox as a minor-league free agent on November 21, 2015.
Danks, 31, was designated for assignment on May 5. He went 0-4 with a 7.25 ERA (18 ER/22.1 IP) and 16 strikeouts in four starts with Chicago this season, his 10th with the organization.
