White Sox recall Frankie Montas to roster as 26th player

CHICAGO - Prior to Game 1 of today's split doubleheader vs. the Kansas City Royals, the Chicago White Sox recalled right-handed pitcher Frankie Montas from Class AA Birmingham. Montas will be active for both games.

Montas, 22, has gone 2-1 with a 2.47 ERA (20 ER/73.0 IP), one shutout, 62 strikeouts and a .205 opponents average (53-258) over 15 starts (seven quality) with Birmingham this season. He ranks among the Southern League leaders in shutouts (T1st), opponents average (3rd) and ERA (5th). Montas has allowed three earned runs or less in all 15 starts, surrendered just one home run and is limiting left-handers to a .184 mark (20-111).

A native of Sainagua, Dominican Republic, Montas was named to the Southern League midseason All-Star team and the World Team at the All-Star Futures Game in Cincinnati. Montas threw a 7.0-inning no-hitter on June 9 at Tennessee, retiring Albert Almora, Kyle Schwarber and Dan Vogelbach in the seventh inning to end the game. He entered the season rated by Baseball America as the No. 5 Prospect in the White Sox organization.

Montas was acquired by Chicago from Boston in a three-team trade with Detroit on July 30, 2013 also involving outfielder Avisail Garcia, infielder Cleuluis Rondon and right-hander J.B. Wendelken. He has gone 13-21 with a 3.85 ERA (147 ER/343.2 IP), three complete games, one shutout and 344 strikeouts in 84 career appearances (72 starts) between the Red Sox (2010-13) and White Sox (2013-15) organizations. Montas originally was signed by Boston as a free agent on December 14, 2009.

Montas has no major-league experience and will wear uniform No. 60.
