The Chicago White Sox have selected right-handed pitcher Dylan Covey from the Oakland Athletics organization in the major-league phase of the Rule 5 Draft.
Covey, 25, made just six starts with Class AA Midland last season after suffering an oblique injury. He posted a 2-1 record with a 1.84 ERA (6 ER/29.1 IP), 26 strikeouts and a .200 (21-105) opponents average before his injury. He averaged 8.0 strikeouts per 9.0 IP.
The 6-foot-1, 220-pound Covey played for the Mesa Solar Sox in the Arizona Fall League in 2016, going 4-0 with a 4.74 ERA (13 ER/24.2 IP) and 17 strikeouts in six starts. He combined with Frankie Montas and Drew Steckenrider on the third no-hitter in AFL history on November 1 at Surprise. Covey started the game, allowing one walk over 5.0 hitless IP.
Covey has gone 18-25 with a 4.83 ERA (172 ER/369.0 IP), 264 strikeouts and a .264 (377-1,427) opponents average in 72 appearances (71 starts) over four career minor-league seasons. He has posted a career 2.22 strikeout-to-walk ratio (119 BB).
The Glendale, Calif. native was selected by the Athletics in the fourth round of the June 2013 First-Year Player Draft out of the University of San Diego. Covey originally was drafted by the Milwaukee Brewers in the first round (14th overall) in the 2010 draft, but did not sign.
With the move, the White Sox 40-man roster increases to 40.
