Benetti racks up miles on wild week of work

White Sox broadcaster doubles up with Florida State game

CHICAGO -- Anyone could get tired simply by looking at Jason Benetti's schedule from this past week.
The White Sox play-by-play announcer for home television broadcasts, who will have all but 20 games in 2018 during Ken "Hawk" Harrelson's final year behind the microphone, started his travels in New York on Wednesday night. He then went to Tallahassee, Fla., on Thursday to prepare for the college football game he would be broadcasting Saturday between Florida State and North Carolina State.
On Friday, Benetti was back in Chicago for the White Sox game against the Royals, and then Saturday he was in both Tallahassee and Chicago, joining the White Sox game in the second inning after the football game's completion.
"The fun part is I left my suitcase in the Tallahassee hotel room Friday and just brought my backpack here to do the game," said Benetti on Wednesday at Guaranteed Rate Field during a slightly more sedate week. "Then I reunited with my suitcase when I got to Tallahassee again that night.
"If I'm going to do this, I have to make sure there's no drop-off. You have to do better than average for those couple of games than what you had planned. Nobody cares what my schedule was. You are watching the Sox game and you don't really care. If we tell you, then you maybe you care and then it's interesting or whatever.
"For Florida State or NC State, those fans don't care. 'He missed who was on that interception was because he's tired,'" Benetti said. "Nobody is saying that and nobody cares. No excuses."
Benetti's one personal addition to this wild timeline was going to see the musical "Dear Evan Hansen" on Broadway with his friends last Wednesday.
"So I was in New York on Wednesday, which was really dumb of me to schedule it then, but I didn't know I was going to have the game," Benetti said. "It's hard to get tickets for that show, so I went. But then I was like, now I have another early flight on Thursday. So not the best planning."
