Myers to have wrist examined as precaution

SAN DIEGO -- Wil Myers will not travel with the Padres on their upcoming road trip, assistant general manager Fred Uhlman Jr. announced before Sunday's game against the Marlins. After experiencing discomfort in his surgically repaired left wrist, Myers will go to Arizona to have it examined.

As part of his progression coming back from surgery, Myers was scheduled to head to New York with the team, when they face the Mets on Tuesday, to continue a hitting program. Myers had surgery on June 18 to remove a bone spur that was causing him tendinitis in his wrist.

"He swung yesterday, felt fine swinging and then afterwards felt a little bit of discomfort in his wrist," Uhlman Jr. said Sunday. "So we are going to have him fly to Arizona tomorrow to see Dr. Sheridan, who did the surgery, just as a precaution, right now. We'll know more tomorrow afternoon."

On Saturday, Myers spoke about being excited about seeing three new stadiums, being around the team again and hitting up his favorite shoe store in New York, Fight Club.

Uhlman Jr. was hopeful that Myers would eventually be able to join the team on the upcoming road trip. On Friday, Myers started swinging a light bat, hitting off a tee.

"We wanted to be precautious with this and see what the discomfort is all about," Uhlman Jr. said. "It's been a little bit up and down and whenever you start swinging the bat like he was, it's definitely progress, so it's a little bit of a setback. We'll see how tomorrow goes. We want to make sure, and he does too, that he is 100 percent when he gets back."

The Padres lineup continues to be without a true leadoff hitter, a void that Myers would fill if healthy.

"It [the news on the injury] sure cut through me a little. He's so valuable to this offense," Padres interim manager Pat Murphy said. "When this guy is in there [lineup], the Padres play better."

Myers was placed on the disabled list May 11 and returned June 11, playing three games before returning to the DL.

Worth noting

• Infielder Cory Spangenberg, who has been on the disabled list since June 28 with a left-knee contusion, will fly to the team's Spring Training facility in Arizona on Monday to continue his rehabilitation and baseball-related activities. He will join the Padres at some point on their upcoming road trip to continue his baseball activities.

• Pitcher Josh Johnson, working his way back from Tommy John surgery, will play catch from 90 feet Monday. Johnson had his throwing program slowed earlier this spring because of a nerve issue in his neck.

• Infielder Jose Rondon, the third-base prospect in the Padres system according to MLB.com, will be out of action the next three to four months after having surgery to repair his fractured right elbow. Rondon suffered the injury recently sliding head first while playing for Double-A San Antonio. He was hitting a combined .267 with three home runs, 31 RBIs and 18 steals between Class A Advanced Lake Elsinore and San Antonio.

• Pitcher Brandon Morrow allowed two runs in 2 1/3 innings in a Minor League rehabilitation start Saturday for Triple-A El Paso. He threw 40 pitches, 28 for strikes. He'll likely throw four innings or 60 pitches the next time out as he works his way back from right-shoulder inflammation.
