Regardless of context, 5 million is a staggering number.

Early Monday evening, Minnesota Twins outfielder Wilkin Ramirez made the unofficial 5,000,000th all-time appearance in Major League Baseball history, according to Baseball-Reference.com.

Ramirez pinch-hit for shortstop Pedro Florimon in the bottom of the sixth – his at-bat culminating in an anti-climactic groundout to shortstop against the Detroit Tigers’ Drew Smyly, the Twins trailing 3-1.

Ramirez edged out Chicago White Sox lefty Matt Thornton by mere moments to earn an achievement that would not be possible if not for this lovely gift we call the Internet.

We here at the MLB Fan Cave wish a hearty “congratulations” to the 27-year-old, who accounts for just 36 of those appearances in his professional career, which dates back to 2003.

Having seen big limited action in 2009 and 2011, we’re rooting for him to finally break out in 2013, and hope he stops by the cave when Minnesota comes to town so we can help him properly celebrate the milestone.
