Williams hopes Davey will come to Spring Training
LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. -- Former Nationals manager Davey Johnson said he didn't plan to attend Spring Training next year because he didn't want to become a distraction to new manager Matt Williams, but the skipper would like Johnson in camp to talk baseball in his office.
Johnson retired as manager of the team after the 2013 season and is now a consultant in the baseball operations department. He did not attend the Winter Meetings.
"[Johnson] is extremely respectful of me and the staff and doesn't want to step on anybody's toes," Williams said. "So hopefully he will call and let us know he's coming. We'll have a big cake. Again, he wished me good luck, and I asked him to be present and he's still in an advisory role with the team. I asked him to come into the office and sit down and talk baseball. And I'd love to pick his brain. Hopefully he accepts that and we can do that."
