Winter League roundup: Perez powers Aguilas

Giants outfielder helps club rally past Licey in Dominican Winter League

Dominican Winter League

Aguilas 7, Licey 4
Aguilas put together a four-run, eighth-inning rally to defeat Licey. Outfielder Juan Perez led the way for Aguilas, going 3-for-4 with three RBIs, while also delivering what proved to be a game-winning, two-run single in the midst of that late rally. Aguilas' comeback left Mariners righty Hector Noesi with a no-decision after he limited the opposition to two runs over five innings. He now has a 2.30 ERA this winter. Box score

Escogido 4, Toros 3
Carlos Santana delivered his first home run of the season on Wednesday -- a walk-off blast to lead off the ninth inning. One inning after Escogido rallied from a 3-1 deficit to tie the game, Santana capped off a three-hit night with the game-ending big fly to right field. Pirates No. 2 prospect Gregory Polanco turned in his second straight three-hit performance, finishing 3-for-4 with a double and one RBI. Box score

Estrellas 9, Gigantes 4
Gigantes stormed out to an early 3-0 lead in the top of the first, but Estrellas answered with three of its own in the bottom half and later put the game away with a five-run sixth inning. Estrellas got production up and down the lineup, as eight different players connected for at least one hit, while seven scored at least one run. First baseman Ed Rogers led the way with a 4-for-5 performance, while outfielder Alfredo Marte hit the game's lone home run. Box score

Magallanes 12, Margarita 2
Major League free agent Carlos Zambrano, who hasn't pitched in the big leagues since 2012, did not allow an earned run over five innings for Magallanes en route to his first victory of the winter. Endy Chavez led Magallanes, offensively, in the rout, finishing just a single shy of the cycle, while scoring two runs and driving in three. Ezequiel Carrera also contributed four hits and drove in a pair of runs. Box score

Caribes 9, La Guaira 2
Caribes used a balanced offensive attack to knock off La Guaira and improve to 34-21 on the winter. Eight of Caribes' nine starters collected at least one hit and one run, while six players notched at least one RBI. Shortstop Eduardo Escobar was the only Caribes' player with a multihit game, recording two singles to go along with one RBI and a run scored. Box score

Caracas 7, Aragua 3
Jesus Guzman had himself quite a day on Wednesday. The 29-year-old collected three hits, an RBI and a run scored in Caracas' win, all after being traded from the Padres to the Astros earlier in the day. Caracas also received a boost from Major League veteran Bobby Abreu, who went 3-for-4 with a team-leading three RBIs. Indians first-base prospect Jesus Aguilar added two hits and a run scored in the winning effort. Box score

Puerto Rican Liga de Beisbol Profesional Roberto Clemente

Santurce 1, Mayaguez 0
Astros No. 2 prospect Jonathan Singleton walked and came around to score the game's first -- and only run -- in the top of the first inning. From there, Santurce pitcher Jorge Martinez stifled the Mayaguez offense, allowing just one hit over eight shutout innings to lower his season ERA to 1.86. Santurce outhit Mayaguez, 10-1, but managed just the one run. Box score

Carolina 5, Ponce 4
Outfielder Anthony Garcia and designated hitter Luis Matos continued to fuel Carolina's offense, as they each turned in their second straight multi-hit game on Wednesday. Hitting in the middle of the order, the duo combined for three doubles and two RBIs. Shortstop Osvaldo Martinez, hitting out of the nine hole, pitched in two more doubles, including a go-ahead RBI double in the sixth inning that proved to be the difference. Box score

Mexican Pacific League

Culiacan 7, Navojoa 1 (Game 1)
Culiacan routed Navojoa behind a six-run fourth inning in the first game of two seven-inning clashes on Wednesday. Tied at 1 entering the fourth, Roman Ali Solis started the rally with a solo home run and Ronnier Mustelier followed later with a bases-loaded triple to break the game open. Navojoa recorded 11 hits, including at least one from eight different players, but couldn't take advantage of its opportunities. Box score

Navojoa 7, Culiacan 1 (Game 2)
Navojoa flipped the script in the second game of the doubleheader, beating Culiacan by the same score it had fallen by in Game 1. Despite recording fewer hits in the nightcap, Navojoa found a way to breakthrough against Culiacan, thanks largely to a pair of two-run homers. Leadoff hitter Jose Guadalupe Chavez hit the first blast in the second inning and designated hitter John Lindsey followed suit in the fifth inning, all but putting the game out of reach. Box score

Los Mochis 4, Mexicali 3
Mexicali staged a late rally against Los Mochis, but couldn't overcome its early four-run deficit in falling to Los Mochis by one run. Los Mochis jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning and tacked on one run each in the second and fourth innings for a 4-0 advantage. Mexicali finally broke through in the seventh inning to plate its first run and added two more in the ninth, but ended the game with the potential tying run on first base. Los Mochis starter Tomas Solis hurled six shutout innings to improve to 7-3 on the season. Box score

Hermosillo 3, Guasave 2
Hermosillo silenced Guasave's offense for the first seven innings, before nearly letting its three-run lead slip away. With his club trailing, 3-0, Guasave designated hitter Brent Clevlen put his club on the board with a run-scoring single in the eighth inning. First baseman Japhet Amador connected for a solo homer one inning later, but that's as close as Guasave would get before Hermosillo finally shut the door. Luis Alfonzo Garcia hit his ninth home run of the season for Hermosillo and Daryle Ward added his third round-tripper in the winning effort. Box score

Obregon 3, Mazatlan 0
Arturo Lopez allowed just three hits over six scoreless innings before turning the game over to his bullpen to secure the shutout. Obregon scored all three of its runs in the third inning, starting with an RBI double from Alfredo Amezaga before Sergio Contreras hit his fifth home run of the season one batter later. That was all the offense Obregon would need, as Mazatlan managed just five hits in the losing effort. Box score
