Winter Leagues: Licey in command of Dominican Series

Dominican Winter League

Licey 1, Escogido 0
Lew Ford's RBI double broke a scoreless tie in the top of the ninth inning and gave Licey all the offense it would need in its Game 3 victory over Escogido Wednesday. The win gives Licey a commanding 3-0 lead in the best-of-nine Dominican Series, while Escogido finds itself in major trouble, after finishing in first place in both the regular season and round-robin playoff. It was veteran closer Fernando Rodney who surrendered the game's only run. Rodney hit Erick Aybar, who promptly stole second and scored on Ford's double. Licey's Esmil Rogers (5 2/3 innings, four hits, five Ks) and Escogido's Chris Leroux (6 1/3 innings, two hits, two Ks) matched zeroes for most of the night, and each received a no-decision. Caguas 5, Mayaguez 4 (11 innings)
Miguel Abreu's fourth hit of the night came in the form of a walk-off single in the 11th inning, and Caguas rallied to defeat Mayaguez and take a 2-1 series lead. Trailing by two in the bottom of the ninth, Aaron Bates led off the frame with a single, and Ramon Castro followed by delivering a game-tying two-run home run, setting the stage for Abreu's heroics. Daniel Ortiz went 2-for-5 with a homer for Mayaguez in defeat. Box score

Navojoa 7, Hermosillo 4
Chris Roberson, Luis Fonseca and John Lindsey all homered for Navojoa, which cruised to a Game 2 victory over Hermosillo, evening the championship series at a game apiece. Navojoa plated seven runs in the first four innings, including two on Lindsey's first-inning blast, which opened the scoring. Roberson launched a two-run homer of his own an inning later, and Navojoa starter Juan Delgadillo allowed two runs on six hits over 6 2/3 innings to earn the win. Box score
