There were high expectations for Stone Garrett ahead of his 2016 full-season debut with Class A Greensboro. However, the Marlins' No. 7 prospect would appear in only 35 games before a practical joke by then-teammate Josh Naylor resulted in right thumb laceration and subsequent surgery that kept the 21-year-old outfielder out of action until mid-August.
Now fully healthy, Garrett is making up for some of that lost time this offseason with a strong showing Australian Baseball League. He was the only player on the World All-Stars to collect multiple hits (2-for-4) in the circuit's annual All-Star Game last week, and then went 1-for-5 with a solo home run in his first post-All-Star contest on Thursday.
All together, Garrett is hitting .310/.352/.488 with eight extra-base hits, three home runs and four stolen bases through 22 games for the Sydney Blue Sox.
Here's a look at some of the top prospects currently making waves in offseason leagues.
Australia
• Kevin Padlo, 3B, Rays -- The Rays' No. 20 prospect posted a .771 OPS thanks to a Midwest League-leading 79 walks and finished tied for third with 16 home runs last season at Class A Bowling Green. Now playing in the ABL for a second straight offseason, the 20-year-old third baseman -- an ABL All-Star along with Garrett -- owns a .260/.356/.521 battling line, with 14 extra-base hits and 17 RBIs, in his first 22 games for the Brisbane Bandits.
Mexico
• Brian Goodwin, OF, Nationals -- After falling off the prospect radar from 2013-15, Goodwin resuscitated his career and ultimately reached the Major Leagues for the first time in '16, hitting .286 with five extra-base hits over parts of 22 games with the Nationals. The club's No. 29 prospect has continued to swing the bat well in Mexico, as he collected hits in five straight games last week to lift his overall slash line to .313/.350/.455 through 25 games for Naranjeros de Hermosillo.
Puerto Rico
• Jorge López, RHP, Brewers -- Coming off of his first shaky start of the offseason, Lopez, the Brewers' No. 14 prospect, got back on track Tuesday in his latest turn for Indios de Mayaguez as he tossed four scoreless innings in a no-decision. The 23-year-old right-hander scattered three hits, walked three and fanned a season-high six in the outing. Among qualified hurlers, Lopez ranks first in WHIP (0.87) and second in ERA (1.56), and he's limited opposing hitters to 17 hits (.145 BAA) while posting a 32-13 strikeout-to-walk ratio in 34 2/3 innings (nine starts).
Venezuela
• Yandy Diaz, 3B/OF, Indians -- The Indians' No. 10 prospect turned in another strong campaign in the high minors in 2016, hitting .318/.408/.446 with 35 extra-base hits and a 71-86 walk-to-strikeout rate in 121 games between the Double-A and Triple-A levels. The 25-year-old third baseman/outfielder has been one of the top hitters this offseason while playing for Leones del Caracas in Venezuela, where he's hit .371/.451/.510 in 40 games. Much of that has to do with his past 10 games, during which he's hit a robust .400/.488/.514, and it's also worth noting that Diaz has seen regular playing time in center field.
• Carlos Tocci, OF, Phillies -- The Venezuela native finished his week on a high note, going 5-for-9 with four RBIs between Tigres de Aragua's contests on Wednesday and Thursday. After hitting .333 in 11 games last offseason, the Phillies' No. 22 prospect has produced a .323/.403/.392 batting line, with 11 extra-base hits and 40 runs scored, in 59 games for Tigres.
• Tomás Telis, C, Marlins -- Telis had another strong season at the plate in 2016 as he hit .310/.362/.429 over 91 games at Triple-A New Orleans. The Marlins' No. 12 prospect continued to hit in the big leagues following a September callup (.308 average in 13 at-bats), and he now owns a .325/.385/.410 slash line -- thanks in part to hits in seven straight games -- in 35 games for Caribes de Anzoategui.
• Renato Núñez, 3B/1B, Athletics -- After getting his first taste of the big leagues in September, the A's No. 5 prospect is tied for second in the league with 11 home runs -- the latest of which he hit at the onset of the week. Though he's cooled off of late after a torrid start, the 22-year-old corner infielder still owns an impressive .304/.389/.542 slash line with 18 extra-base hits and 35 RBIs through 45 games for Tigres de Aragua.
