• Outfielder Kirk Nieuwenhuis (bone bruise, left knee) participated in defensive drills Sunday and took batting practice in an indoor cage. He hopes to take at-bats in a Minor League game either Monday or Wednesday, with an eye toward full participation later in the week.

• Television personality Regis Philbin stopped by Tradition Field on Sunday, spending time in the dugout and in WPIX's broadcast booth. After the Mets rapped out two first-inning hits with Philbin on the bench, manager Terry Collins quipped that he'll "have a uniform ready" for him on Opening Day.
