Worth noting

• Left-hander John Gast underwent left shoulder surgery on Friday during which Dr. Anthony Romeo repaired a muscle in the lat region of Gast's shoulder. Gast has an expected recovery time of 8-12 months, meaning he's expected to still be on a rehab program when Spring Training opens next season.

• According to Matheny, right-hander Chris Carpenter remains engaged in a strength and rehab program back in St. Louis, though the Cardinals are unsure of when Carpenter will be cleared to resume throwing. Carpenter stepped back from his Minor League rehab assignment after experiencing some numbness in his right hand during a start on Saturday.

• Right-hander Carlos Martinez, who was optioned back to Triple-A on Thursday, is scheduled to start for Memphis on Sunday. The Cardinals made the move to send out Martinez so that he would be able to retain his strength as a starter.

• ESPN will pick up the Cardinals' Aug. 5 and Aug. 7 games against the Dodgers for its national telecasts. The first of those two games will start at 6:05 p.m. CT, while the second is scheduled to have a 7:05 p.m. CT first pitch.

Also, MLB Network announced on Friday that it will televise two of the team's upcoming games. The games select include the Cardinals' Aug. 1 game in Pittsburgh (6 p.m. CT) and an Aug. 22 home game against the Braves (7 p.m. CT).
