Worth noting

• Carpenter and Allen Craig were back in the Cardinals' lineup on Wednesday after a day off on Tuesday, hitting first and fourth, respectively. Kolten Wong was also out of the lineup after going 5-for-10 with three stolen bases in the last two games.

Craig went 2-for-4 with an RBI double and his 12th home run of the year, a solo shot, in the win to get to 90 RBIs on the season, while Carpenter went 1-for-4 with a sacrifice fly.

• Matheny said he really did not want to use left-handed reliever Tyler Lyons in Tuesday's 6-3 loss, but he said Michael Wacha would be available on Wednesday.

"Every day it seems like right now, we're going through mass evaluation with all of our young relievers in terms of where they are," Matheny said. "We needed Tyler to step in for a couple yesterday, he did a really nice job."
