Joe Mauer, who is on the 7-day disabled list after sustaining a concussion on a foul tip while catching on Aug. 19, ramped up his exercises on Friday, according to general manager Terry Ryan. Mauer is expected to progress to hitting off a tee on Saturday.

• Outfielder Byron Buxton, ranked as the No. 1 overall prospect according to MLB.com, was named the Most Valuable Player and Prospect of the Year by the Midwest League on Friday. Buxton, 19, hit .341/.431/.559 with eight homers, 15 doubles, 10 triples and 32 stolen bases in 68 games with Class A Cedar Rapids before being promoted to Class A Advanced Fort Myers in late June.

• Right-hander Vance Worley had an MRI exam on his right shoulder, which didn't show any issues, but he will be shut down for the rest of the year, according to Ryan. Worley, who was acquired in the trade that sent Ben Revere to the Phillies, posted a 7.21 ERA in 10 starts with the Twins before being optioned to Triple-A Rochester on May 22. He fared better at Rochester with a 3.88 ERA in nine starts, but he last pitched on July 7 because of shoulder problems.

• The Twins completed their trade with the Royals from Aug. 11, as the Twins received an undisclosed amount of cash in exchange for infielder Jamey Carroll, according to Ryan.
