Worth noting

• Padres outfielder Kyle Blanks left Tuesday night's game in Pittsburgh midway through the fifth inning due to illness. In the bottom of the third, Blanks stumbled in right while apparently on track to catch Marlon Byrd's line drive, resulting in both Pirates runs.

"Blanks feels better today," Padres manager Bud Black said on Wednesday. "He was ill yesterday, but he says he feels much better today. He's available to play. We'll see how we use him, not in the lineup, but he's available to pinch-hit or double switch."

• Padres outfielder Mark Kotsay has been nursing a calf injury. After getting a pinch-hit single on Tuesday night, he was immediately removed from the game for a pinch-runner.

"Kotsay had been nursing a little bit of a tight calf," Black said. "When he got the base hit out of the box ... looking at the third baseman and shortstop and where they were, he tried to step it up just a touch and he re-aggravated it, so I'm not sure about his availability because it's sore."
