Worth noting

• Whereas some pitchers rely on their catchers to call their games, new D-backs hurler Bronson Arroyo prefers to do that himself.

"Most of my career, I've called all of my games, to be honest with you," Arroyo said. "A lot more than most guys I've ever played with. It's been a big chess match for me, and what my eyes and my instincts tell me is what I feel like has gotten me to where I am in this game."

• The D-backs will have a shorter workout on Friday, with pitchers taking a break from throwing sessions.

• Shortstop Chris Owings has taken some reps at second base during drills to increase his versatility.

"We've got those guys popping back and forth a little bit," Gibson said. "We're pretty flexible with what we can do with guys. We're very talented and deep with the guys we have in the infield for sure."
