Worth noting

• Third baseman Josh Donaldson, who experienced right calf tightness during Sunday's game, will be held out of game action until at least Wednesday.

"He wants to play tomorrow," Melvin said. "I'm just not going to do it. Everybody's going to get one of the next two days off leading into the [Thursday] off-day, so I'll plan the next day for him."

• Right-hander Ryan Cook threw live batting practice on Sunday, and his next step is a simulated game on Wednesday. The right-hander might need two of those before getting into a game, and it remains doubtful he'll be ready by Opening Day.

• Infielder Eric Sogard will have his No. 9 retired at nearby Thunderbird High on Tuesday night. He's the first player to receive such an honor by the school's athletic program.
