Worth noting

• In a perfect world, Showalter hopes David Lough can take over the leadoff role. Lough has been mostly a platoon player in left field with Nelson Cruz, but he could potentially earn some starts against lefties, similar to Nate McLouth last year, as the season progresses.

"We would like him to be able to do it," Showalter said. "It would fit everything better, especially when Manny gets back ... David's got the skills set to do it. We'll see.

"There's a different dynamic when he is on base. Any time you can make people rush a little bit and get in a hurry ... they hurry when David is hitting. He'll open up some things for some hitters behind him if he can get on base like he has."

• Double-A Bowie's Tim Berry had a solid debut on Saturday, pitching seven innings and allowing just one run on three hits while striking out seven and walking one.

• Friday's challenged play at second base called into question the newly enforced rule about what constitutes a catch after the fielder takes the ball out of his glove. "Everybody knows that's the way they are going to call it," Showalter said of a player having to secure the ball in the transfer. "They called it in Spring Training. You're going to see it with fly balls; guys are going to catch a ball, take a step or two, and go to take it out of their glove and drop it, and [the umpires] are going to call it a no-catch. They've told everybody that's the way it is going to be -- the intent of the rule completely, so to speak."
