Worth noting
• Matheny described himself as "sick" after Monday's extra-innings loss. So how did he handle the one on Tuesday? He slept it off on his office couch.
Deciding that it was too late to drive home "by the time [he] got through sulking," Matheny slept the night at Busch Stadium. Two pillows and a comforter were still stacked on that sofa two hours before Wednesday's 12:45 p.m. CT first pitch.
"For the most part, I've been pretty fortunate," Matheny said, when asked if he often has trouble sleeping. "I get a thought out and then I sleep pretty good. These last couple [losses], a lot of sorting to do. I usually use the drive home to unwind that some, too. But I think everybody is pretty wiped out right now. It didn't take long to fall asleep once I finally allowed myself to stop thinking."
• Joe Kelly, who is on the disabled list with a left hamstring strain, intends to travel with the Cardinals on their upcoming road trip. He has not yet resumed throwing off the mound but will be able to do so under the supervision of pitching coach Derek Lilliquist while on the road.
• Catcher Yadier Molina got the benefit of consecutive days off after Matheny sat him for Wednesday's series finale. Matheny said he was leaning toward giving Molina the day off and that the decision was solidified after the club played consecutive extra-innings games.
• Top prospect Oscar Taveras entered Wednesday with a 13-game hitting streak for Triple-A Memphis. He went 1-for-2 with an RBI single on Tuesday. Kolten Wong, recently demoted from the Majors, had two hits in the loss.
• Double-A Springfield blew a two-run lead in the ninth and eventually fell, 9-7, on Tuesday. Reliever Dean Kiekhefer allowed seven runs on seven hits in the ninth. Springfield outfielder David Popkins had homered earlier in the game.
