• Jeff Mathis started at catcher Saturday night for the fourth time in seven days. Manager Mike Redmond said Jarrod Saltalamacchia is battling a stiff back, so he's trying to give the starting backstop extra rest.

"We want to keep these guys as fresh as we can -- especially the catcher position," Redmond said. "These guys get banged up. These next two months are wear and tear for catchers for sure."
