NEW YORK -- Pirates manager Clint Hurdle said X-rays on left fielder Starling Marte, who was hit on the left side of the face with a one-hopper during Pittsburgh's 11-2 loss to the Mets on Wednesday, came back negative.
Marte left the game in the fifth after diving for a ball hit by Yoenis Cespedes. He was checked on by Hurdle and a trainer and was spelled by Matt Joyce.
"What we're trying to do is continue to work on getting the swelling out," Hurdle said.
Marte, who wasn't in the lineup for Pittsburgh's series finale at Citi Field on Thursday, has had a stellar campaign both at the plate and in the field.
In addition to slashing .332/.374/.498, he's tied for 12th among all position players in the Major Leagues with a Defensive WAR of 1.0.
Gregory Polanco, the Pirates' starting right fielder, said he's never been hit while diving for a line drive in the outfield, but rather has had the ball roll past him.
"One time over me, one time under me," Polanco said. "You don't really think about it, just trying to catch it."
