DETROIT -- For the Red Sox, this four-game series in Detroit wouldn't have been complete without one more logistical challenge.
Shortstop Xander Bogaerts was supposed to return from the bereavement list for Monday afternoon's finale against Tigers ace Justin Verlander, but his flight from Aruba was never cleared for takeoff on Sunday night.
Bogaerts will fly directly to Boston, and should be back at shortstop for Tuesday's game to open a homestand against the Orioles.
"He was on the flight last night ready to take off, and they actually sat for two hours before they canceled the flight," said Red Sox manager John Farrell. "This was an unexpected situation with his travel and unfortunately the flight [was] canceled as so many have been around the East Coast, and he's been a victim of the backup in the system."
Still without Hanley Ramirez (flu) and Jackie Bradley Jr. (right knee), the Red Sox were looking forward to Bogaerts playing in Detroit.

The series in Detroit has been filled with roster/lineup shuffling for Farrell.
Mookie Betts missed the first two games with the flu. Matt Barnes was also out on bereavement until returning to get the win Sunday. Lefty Robbie Ross Jr. had to be placed on the disabled list for the start of the series because of the flu.
Ramirez hasn't been to Detroit at all because of his illness. The Red Sox hope he can play Tuesday night against the Orioles. And Bradley injured his right knee Saturday, didn't play Sunday, then flew to Boston prior to Monday's game so the team's medical staff could examine him.

"It's unusual," said Farrell. "These are things you don't anticipate. They're totally out of your control. As I mentioned yesterday, you do what you can with what you have where you are. I've gotten accustomed to a list of who's available put on my desk before we start to put a lineup together."
Even those who aren't with the team in Detroit are getting sick. Righty reliever Tyler Thornburg, who is on the disabled list with his right shoulder impingement, has been slowed in his rehab by the flu. The same goes for utility man Josh Rutledge, on the DL with a left hamstring strain.
The Red Sox continue to do everything in their power to keep the illness from spreading, but it's been tough to contain.
"We already have [disinfected the clubhouse] back in Boston," said Farrell. "It's been fumigated multiple times. I think if you read about it, the general population is going through another boom. It's hit again. So, we're no different."
