BOSTON -- When Xander Bogaerts got belted in the right hand in the bottom of the ninth inning on Tuesday night, the two thoughts that came to his mind first were, "Ouch, that hurts," and "Not again."
While X-rays taken after the game were negative, Bogaerts was in quite a bit of pain and was diagnosed with a right hand contusion after the Red Sox fell, 3-1, to the Phillies. It is unclear if Bogaerts will be ready to start on Thursday night, when the Red Sox open a four-game series against the Yankees.
It is the same injury he suffered on July 6, 2017, after getting hit by Tampa Bay righty Jake Faria.
"As soon as I got hit, I was like, 'I can't believe it.' It happens. It's part of the game," said Bogaerts. "If I wouldn't have fouled off those first two pitches I wouldn't have gotten hit, but it's part of the game. We'll see how I feel over the next few days."
The pitch that hit Bogaerts was a 99.1-mph fastball by Phillies righty Seranthony Dominguez.

"This was a bit harder [than the pitch by Faria]," Bogaerts said. "This guy was throwing hard. I wasn't expecting him to do that."
Though Bogaerts returned just two days after suffering the injury last year, his performance at the plate was impacted. Bogaerts hit .232 with four homers, 21 RBIs and a .662 OPS in his 259 at-bats after getting hit in '17.
Bogaerts hopes the injury doesn't linger as much this time. Perhaps that will lead to the Red Sox taking a more conservative approach with his recovery.

"I got hit good," said Bogaerts. "Let it heal. The swelling is down. I iced it already. Just talk to the trainers and see whatever they have in mind."
If Bogaerts misses time, the Red Sox will likely go with Brock Holt at shortstop.
Bogaerts has again been a solid all-around player for the Red Sox this season, slashing .275/.342/.513 with 16 homers and 65 RBIs.
The Red Sox are already without Rafael Devers (left hamstring strain) and ace Chris Sale (mild inflammation, left shoulder) for the upcoming four-game showdown against the Yankees.
Fortunately, Boston has a five-game cushion in the American League East.
"We're fine," said Red Sox manager Alex Cora. "We know where we're at. We know where they're at. Just come out here and play good baseball."
