Gomes' return delayed by right hand injury

Indians catcher has been out since July 17 with separated right shoulder

CHICAGO -- The return of Indians catcher is on hold -- again.
Gomes was hit on the right hand on Wednesday night while playing with Double-A Akron in what was supposed to be his final rehab game. He has been sidelined since July 17 with a separated right shoulder.
A scan of Gomes' hand was taken on Thursday, and the Indians sent it to noted hand surgeon Dr. Thomas Graham (formerly of the Cleveland Clinic) to be evaluated.
"Dr. Graham most likely will read it [Friday] morning, so that's where we're at," manager Terry Francona said before Thursday's series finale against the White Sox at U.S. Cellular Field. "He got hit pretty hard. We want to get all the information first and then we'll go from there."
Francona had said Wednesday that Gomes probably would have started Friday when the Indians host the Tigers in the opener of a three-game series.
was in the Indians' original lineup on Thursday, but he was scratched about an hour before game time with lower abdominal discomfort. He was slated to play right field and bat fifth. was added to the lineup playing left field, with moving from left to right.
