Yankees acquire SS Stephen Drew from Boston

The New York Yankees today announced they have acquired SS Stephen Drew and cash considerations from the Boston Red Sox in exchange for INF Kelly Johnson.

Drew, 31, hit .176 (23-for-131) with 11R, 6 doubles, 4HR and 11RBI in 39 games with the Red Sox this season. He signed a one-year contract with Boston on May 29 extending through the 2014 season. In 975 career games over parts of nine Major League seasons with Arizona (2006-12), Oakland (2012) and Boston (2013-14), he has hit .261 (949-for-3,642) with 482R, 216 doubles, 94HR and 427RBI. The left-handed hitter was originally selected by the Diamondbacks in the first round of the 2004 First-Year Player Draft.

Johnson, 32, batted .219 (44-for-201) with 21R, 9 doubles, 6HR and 22RBI in 77 games with the Yankees. He was signed by the Yankees to a one-year contract on December 6, 2013.
