Jeter picks up RBI following overturned call

NEW YORK -- With two outs and the bases loaded in the fifth inning, Derek Jeter hit a slow roller to Red Sox shortstop Xander Bogaerts and was initially called out on a close play at first base.

Yankees manager Joe Girardi almost immediately challenged the play. The call was overturned, sending the fans at Yankee Stadium into a frenzy as they erupted with chants of "Derek Jeter."

"It looked close," said Girardi after New York's 9-4 loss. "That's the toughest call for me. ... Obviously it was very close, so I went out and was told [by the Yankees video team] that he was safe and that's why I asked for a replay."

Jeter was credited with an RBI single -- and hit No. 3,446 in his career -- and the Yankees trimmed the Red Sox's lead to 7-3 and brought the tying run to the plate, however, Brett Gardner struck out to end the inning.

Gardner spiked his batting helmet to the dirt and was immediately tossed by home-plate umpire Tim Timmons, briefly protesting the call further before being led off the field by Girardi.
