Jeter ties Wagner for sixth on all-time hits list

NEW YORK -- Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter moved into a tie with Honus Wagner for sixth place on Major League Baseball's all-time hits list with an infield single -- No. 3,430 -- in the first inning off Indians starter Trevor Bauer in Friday night's 10-6 win at the Stadium.

"Big names. I mean really big names," manager Joe Girardi said. "It's been fun to watch him go through it this season."

Jeter hit a ground ball up the middle that was fielded by shortstop Jose Ramirez at the edge of the infield toward shallow center field. Ramirez spun and threw to first, but the ball bounced out of first baseman Carlos Santana's glove and was ruled a hit by official scorer David Freeman.

"The field was a little wet," Santana said. "I don't know what happened, but I tried to catch the ball and I slipped a little bit when I tried to find the base. The ball came and I dropped it."

This marked yet another milestone for Jeter, who later scored on Carlos Beltran's single in a five-run first inning for the Yankees.

Jeter, 40, announced before the start of the year that this would be his final season. Tris Speaker is fifth on the hit list with 3,514.
