NEW YORK -- Once Monday afternoon's non-waiver Trade Deadline chaos settled into quiet, after the Mets acquired Jay Bruce from the Reds and the Yankees dealt Carlos Beltrán to Texas, a sold-out crowd piled into Citi Field for what was theoretically still the day's main event.
The New York rivals did not disappoint with an extra-inning Subway Series affair that the Yankees won, 6-5, on Starlin Castro's sacrifice fly in the 10th.

"It's been a little bit tough, because we lost good people in the trade," Castro said. "We just continue to grind it out. Like we did today. We forget it. We're going to miss those guys but we try to go out there, have some fun."

Trailing for most of the later innings, the Yankees tied things on Didi Gregorius' bloop two-run single against Addison Reed, who had strung together 16 1/3 consecutive scoreless innings before that hit. The Yankees then loaded the bases with no outs in the 10th against Seth Lugo, the last man available out of the Mets' bullpen, before Castro's sacrifice fly put them ahead.
Anchoring a patchwork lineup with multiple regulars injured and Bruce not yet on the ground in Queens, Matt Reynolds hit a three-run homer and Wilmer Flores added a solo shot to highlight a five-run assault on Yankees starter CC Sabathia. But the Yankees managed three runs off Sabathia's counterpart, Logan Verrett, before rallying late against a shorthanded bullpen.

"They're pretty frustrating," Mets manager Terry Collins said of his team's recent run of late-inning losses, including two blown saves from Jeurys Familia last week. "But it's baseball. We'd like to get in that situation every night where we've got the lead and those guys coming into the game. We'll take our chances."
With Aroldis Chapman off to Chicago and Andrew Miller in Cleveland, Dellin Betances locked down the ninth for his first save as the Yankees' new closer. The Mets had runners on second and third with two outs, but Betances struck out Curtis Granderson swinging.
"I'm very proud of the way he battled back in that last inning. Just shows the maturity that he's had over the past three years," Sabathia said of Betances.

MOMENTS THAT MATTERED
Dunkin' Didi: Facing an 0-2 count with two runners on in the eighth, Gregorius went to work against Reed. He managed to work the count to 2-2, and Ronald Torreyes advanced to second on a wild pitch. Finally, on the eighth pitch of the at-bat, Brett Gardner and Torreyes scored to knot the game at 5 as Gregorius dunked a fastball to the opposite field for a bloop single.

Rey of hope: Called up before the game to fill in for the injured Asdrúbal Cabrera, Reynolds flew through the night from Las Vegas to New York City, unable to sleep due to an uncomfortable aisle seat. Any negative effects from that adventure did not last long. Reynolds smoked his three-run homer off Sabathia in the sixth inning, turning a 3-2 deficit into a 5-3 lead. More >
"I just go out there and I try to do the best I can," Reynolds said. "I've been fortunate to get some good pitches to hit and I haven't missed them. I don't think there's any special reason why. I just think when I'm up here, I'm comfortable and I get locked in."
Top o' the order: After an attempt to manufacture a run by himself in the first inning in the form of an inside-the-park home run ended with him being thrown out at the plate -- Statcast™ clocked his trip around the bases at 14.89 seconds, fastest of any player this season -- Gardner put the Yankees ahead with a double in the fifth. Jacoby Ellsbury then gave the Yankees a 3-1 lead with a single one pitch later. Ellsbury also scored the Yankees' first run when he scored from third on a wild pitch the inning prior.

Flores' second annual Trade Deadline home run highlighted a two-hit night off Sabathia, upping his slugging percentage to .639 against left-handed pitchers since the start of last season. That's third best in the Majors, behind only Giancarlo Stanton and Nelson Cruz.

Appearing in his third game with the Mets, outfielder Justin Ruggiano departed after three innings due to a left hamstring strain. With Yoenis Céspedes and Cabrera also taking up active roster spots but unavailable, the Mets' bench was short enough that they asked pitcher Steven Matz to serve as a pinch-hitter in the sixth. Yankees: The Yankees might have a new-look bullpen, but their starting rotation is mostly still intact. Ace Masahiro Tanaka takes the hill Tuesday at 7:10 p.m. ET in the second game at Citi Field. The right-hander surrendered four earned runs and seven hits in five innings against Houston last time out and hopes to deliver a bounceback outing and a Yankees victory.
Mets: Bruce will make his Mets debut Tuesday, likely playing right field and batting cleanup against the Yankees at Citi Field. The Mets on Monday acquired Bruce from the Reds for prospects Dilson Herrera and Max Wotell. The nine-year veteran slugger will start behind pitcher Jacob deGrom.
