Teixeira's 2 HRs power Yanks past White Sox

CHICAGO -- Mark Teixeira hit two home runs with six RBIs, including a grand slam, as the Yankees continued their offensive tear in a 13-6 victory over the White Sox on Friday night.

The Yankees tagged rookie left-hander Carlos Rodon for eight runs in three-plus innings, scoring once in the first and five times in the second. They scored five more in the fourth inning and once in the sixth off Chicago's bullpen.

"It's been good since the All-Star break," Teixeira said. "The two days off since the break really helped. I'm just seeing the ball really well right now. The bat's feeling quick and I'm getting some good pitches to hit."

New York has scored 63 runs in the last week and leads the Majors with 17 wins since the All-Star break. Alex Rodriguez scored four runs and reached base five times.

"I thought our guys bounced back great today," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said. "We put great at-bats on a young pitcher we hadn't seen that had a great start in his last start. The guys did a good job being patient."

Yankees starter Nathan Eovaldi gave up three runs and seven hits across 5 2/3 innings before the Yankees bullpen allowed two runs in the seventh and one more in the ninth. The White Sox have won just one game against teams over .500 since the All-Star break.

"Well, the energy was there," said designated hitter Adam LaRoche, who finished 4-for-5 and pitched a scoreless ninth in his big league pitching debut. "Don't mistake a loss like that like we were dead or we didn't have energy. It's there. That's baseball and it's going to happen. It happens to the best teams and the best pitchers."

MOMENTS THAT MATTERED
Long-distance Tex messages: Teixeira set a Major League record by homering from both sides of the plate for the 14th time in his career. Batting right-handed against Rodon, Teixeira hit a second-inning grand slam to center field, then cleared the center-field wall again in the fourth inning, slugging a two-run shot off Matt Albers from the left side. They were the 27th and 28th home runs of the season for Teixeira, who enjoyed a multi-homer game for the second consecutive day.

"It's a good record to have. It's a cool record," Teixeira said. "Hopefully I'll add to it." More >

Abreu adds another: Jose Abreu homered for a team-high 18th time, his fourth homer in his last 10 games. Abreu knocked a two-run shot to right-center field in the third inning off a 1-2 count from Eovaldi. The White Sox first baseman has reached base safely in 11 straight games, with 13 RBIs in that span.

Nate can't go late: Eovaldi has consistently enjoyed run support this season, coming into Friday's start averaging 7.09 runs per outing, and that continued to hold true. The bad news for the Yanks was that Eovaldi was inefficient, needing 117 pitches to navigate 5 2/3 innings despite the huge lead. The Yanks would like more distance from Eovaldi, who has not made it through the sixth inning in 13 of his 20 outings -- and four of his last five.

"That's been one of my big things," Eovaldi said. "I've been trying to work on it, slowly and steadily attack the third time through. You don't want to get into a battle with one batter that is seven or eight pitches. You want to throw four or five pitches and get out of the inning."

Rodon roughed: After he threw one of his best outings on the road, Rodon took the loss in his short outing at home. The three-plus innings marked his shortest outing as a starter, while the eight runs allowed marked a career high. The lefty once again had difficulty with his command, allowing eight hits, four walks and three wild pitches. He's surrendered a grand slam in back-to-back home starts.

"Just gotta be better," Rodon said. "That's about it."

SHUCK EXITS
White Sox outfielder J.B. Shuck entered Friday's game in the seventh inning as a pinch-hitter and exited before it was over with a strained left hamstring. Shuck tripled in his at-bat, eventually scoring on a wild pitch, after which he came up holding the back of his leg. He will be evaluated Saturday.

"Coming into home plate, [he] felt something, so we took him out as a precaution and then we'll look at it in the morning," White Sox manager Robin Ventura said. "But him going off it didn't look good."

QUOTABLE
"It's comical. It's not fun, but you have to have fun with it. He's throwing 50-mph curveballs. I'm taking four steps before I get there. I didn't know what the heck he was going to do that last pitch, and obviously I found out he could throw it right past me. Good times. Whatever. We won the game, that's all that matters." -- Brendan Ryan, on his ninth-inning strikeout against LaRoche

"You have to be able to throw it in the strike zone. You can't be erratic, and when you're up and you're behind, you're throwing fastballs and they're sitting on stuff, that happens. It's a learning lesson for him, but he's got good stuff and again, he's had it where he's got himself in trouble and he's gotten out of it." -- Ventura, on Rodon's command

WHAT'S NEXT
Yankees: The Yankees waited until the completion of Friday's game to announce that right-hander Bryan Mitchell will start Saturday's 7:10 p.m. ET contest against the White Sox.

White Sox: John Danks takes the mound for the White Sox in the second game of a three-game series at U.S. Cellular Field, where he looks to build off his best month of the season. Danks finished July with a 2-0 record and 3.81 ERA, including three scoreless outings. First pitch is scheduled for 6:10 p.m. CT.
