Pipeline Preview: Mateo looking to extend hitting streak

June 28th, 2017

Here's a look at top prospects to watch in today's Minor League action:
Hitter to watch: (Yankees' No. 4), Trenton vs. Richmond (7 p.m. ET on MiLB.TV)
MLB Pipeline's No. 38 overall prospect started at shortstop and went 2-for-5 with one run scored out of the leadoff spot on Tuesday in his debut for Double-A Trenton. Mateo extended his hitting streak to nine games in the process, eight of which he recorded with Class A Advanced Tampa while hitting .240/.288/.400 with 28 extra-base hits and 28 steals in 69 games before being promoted.

Pitcher to watch: Stephen Gonsalves (Twins' No. 2), Chattanooga at Mississippi (8 p.m. ET on MiLB.TV)
After missing much of the first two months of the season with shoulder discomfort, Gonsalves (No. 79 overall) has made up for the lost time by allowing three or fewer earned runs in each of his seven starts en route to posting a 2.85 ERA for Double-A Chattanooga. The 22-year-old lefty has been particularly sharp of late, as he's recorded 19 strikeouts against two walks in his last two starts while completing seven innings in both. Overall, Gonsalves owns a 51-to-9 strikeout-to-walk ratio with a 0.85 WHIP and .174 opponents' average in 41 innings.

Duel of the day: Adrian Morejon (Padres' No. 3) vs. Cole Ragans (Rangers' No. 8), Tri-City at Spokane (9:30 p.m. ET)
Morejon, 18, is set to make his third start of the season (as well as the third of his career) for Class A Short Season Tri-City. After tossing three innings of one-run ball in his debut, the No. 90 overall prospect followed it up by allowing three runs in five innings with six strikeouts in his most recent turn. Signed for $11 million last July, the precocious lefty's ceiling on the mound is among the highest in the Minors.

Ragans bounced back from a shaky season debut to dominate in his second start for Spokane, as he recorded nine of his 15 outs via the strikeout over five scoreless innings while allowing just one hit. The 19-year-old lefty, a first-round Draft pick in 2016, has the makings of three average-or-better offerings, with plenty of physical projection remaining on his 6-foot-4, 190-pound frame.
