NEW YORK -- Sunday night's Subway Series finale between the Yankees and Mets at Yankee Stadium was postponed due to rain and will be made up on Monday, Aug. 13, at 7:05 p.m. ET.
Luis Severino will still make his scheduled start on Monday against the Rays at Tropicana Field. Yankees manager Aaron Boone said they flew Severino out to St. Petersburg before the rainout was announced to make sure the starter got a good night of sleep because they wanted to keep him on schedule.
Masahiro Tanaka -- who was slated to get the start in the series finale -- will now start on Tuesday at Tampa in place of Carsten Sabathia, who's start was moved to Friday against the Royals at home. Boone said that he will take advantage of any opportunity to give Sabathia some extra rest to help protect his troublesome right knee.
"I think going into the season we pictured, when we can, to give him extra days," Boone said. "We think he really benefits from it, and to push him back a few more days we think really benefits him and us on the long-term for the rest of the season."
Sabathia said he received his third injection in the knee this year just before the All-Star break. The left-hander said he welcomes the extra days off and mentioned that he might play some catch or throw a bullpen session before Friday's start, but wants to give himself as much rest as he can.
"The more time that I can give that thing just to let the medicine move around in there, it'll react better," Sabathia said. "So now we got the extra days, so might as well just keep letting it rest."
Luis Cessa is slated to make his next start on Wednesday in the finale against the Rays, and Sonny Gray will take the mound on Thursday at Yankee Stadium in the series opener against the Royals.
The Yankees avoided a meeting with Mets ace Jacob deGrom on Sunday. The right-hander has gone 5-4 this season with a Major League-best 1.68 ERA.
"He's a tough customer, obviously," Boone said. "Anytime we take the field, we feel like we have a really good chance, no matter who's out there, especially at home. ... But obviously tonight was a tough matchup for sure."
