DETROIT -- Masahiro Tanaka spent his Sunday morning taking a trip down memory lane, trying to prepare for what the Yankees right-hander expected would be inclement conditions pitching against the Tigers under the lights.
"I was thinking that I was going to pitch today, obviously," Tanaka said through an interpreter. "When I was in high school, I used to pitch in colder weather. I was thinking that it reminded of me of myself at that time going out there today to pitch."
One day after the Yankees and Tigers braved the coldest temperatures for any game ever played at Comerica Park, with a first-pitch temperature of 31 degrees, a wintry mix of snow and rain forced the postponement of Sunday's contest.

No makeup date has been announced. Since this weekend was the Yankees' only scheduled visit to Detroit, they will have to make up the game on a common off-day.
Yankees manager Joe Girardi said that the club would push back their starters in turn, meaning that Tanaka will instead pitch on Tuesday evening against the Blue Jays in Toronto. Michael Pineda and Nathan Eovaldi will also start in the three-game set.
"Today wouldn't have been very nice out," Girardi said. "Obviously, the next three days the weather will be a lot better for us inside [at Rogers Centre], and it looks like it's better when we get to New York. Maybe we're through the real bad stuff. I wouldn't count on it, but maybe."
The rainout is the Yankees' second in the season's first week, and would have had Tanaka starting on the regular four days' rest; instead, he'll now face Toronto with additional rest coming off his Opening Day start against the Astros on April 5.
"More days in between gives you more recovery days, so I take that as a plus," Tanaka said.

One benefit for the Yankees is that the rainout and Monday's scheduled off-day will offer a break to the bullpen, which Girardi said that he had been concerned about.
"It gives them a couple days' rest," Girardi said. "It was one of the reasons I was willing to use the bullpen the way I did [Saturday], too. I really, in my mind, never thought we were going to play today."
