Yanks acquire Martinez in swap with Astros

The Yankees acquired outfielder Fernando Martinez from the Astros on Tuesday in exchange for right-hander Charles Basford, though the club has not confirmed the deal.

Appearing in 52 games for the Astros over the past two seasons, Martinez hit .182 with one home run and three RBIs in 11 games with the club before being designated for assignment.

Martinez, a former top prospect of the Mets, was claimed off waivers by the Astros prior to the 2012 season. He battled for a spot in the Astros' outfield to start the season but began the campaign on the disabled list.

Basford, a 37th-round pick by the Yankees last year, made his first appearance of the season on Monday for Class A Short-Season Staten Island, allowing four hits, including a homer, in two innings.
