Yanks give nine pitchers an inning apiece vs. Phils

TAMPA, Fla. -- Ryan Howard and Marlon Byrd launched back-to-back home runs, and Jeff Manship turned in a solid start as the Phillies defeated the Yankees, 6-0, on Tuesday night at George M. Steinbrenner Field.

Howard and Byrd connected for their solo blasts in the third inning off Yankees left-hander Vidal Nuno, one of the three hurlers bumped to the bullpen earlier in the day when New York named Michael Pineda as its fifth starter to open the season.

Manship pitched four scoreless innings in the start for Philadelphia, with the right-hander scattering five hits with no walks and two strikeouts. Mike Adams and Justin De Fratus followed with scoreless frames.

"I have no idea what's going to happen," said Manship, who is a candidate to make the Opening Day roster as a long man in the bullpen. "I don't really know. I'm just waiting to hear. Hopefully, it's good news."

After Adam Warren pitched a scoreless opening inning for the Yankees, Philadelphia first got on the board with an unearned run off David Phelps in the second, as third baseman Kelly Johnson committed two fielding errors to set up a Bobby Abreu run-scoring single.

The Phillies padded their advantage in the sixth inning against Shane Greene. Byrd doubled and scored on Domonic Brown's RBI single, and Carlos Ruiz knocked home Brown with a soft single to right field. The Yankees used nine pitchers for an inning apiece.

Yankees captain Derek Jeter logged a fifth-inning single, marking Jeter's sixth hit of the spring. Jeter is batting just .128 (6-for-47) in Grapefruit League play.
