Yelich returns; Jose, Cosart set for next step

MIAMI -- The Marlins lost a starting pitcher on Tuesday, but they regained an important piece of their everyday lineup.

Right-hander Kendry Flores was placed on the 15-day disabled list with right shoulder tendinitis (retroactive to Aug. 22), while outfielder Christian Yelich was reinstated from the DL (right knee contusion) to start in left field against the Pirates on Tuesday night.

Meanwhile, a handful of Marlins pitchers continue to progress toward their return, headed by ace Jose Fernandez.

On the 15-day DL since Aug. 11 with a right biceps strain, Fernandez will throw a bullpen session on Thursday -- his first since sustaining the injury. The 23-year-old, who is 4-0 with a 2.30 ERA in seven starts this season, has recently only been throwing off flat ground.

Jarred Cosart (1-4, 5.36 ERA), on the Minor League DL with vertigo, is also scheduled to pitch on Thursday, as he'll start for Class A Advanced Jupiter and throw 65-75 pitches. The 25-year-old, who last pitched with Miami on July 4, threw four scoreless innings on 44 pitches for the Gulf Coast Marlins on Saturday.

Cosart will be followed in Thursday's outing by injured Marlins reliever Andre Rienzo, who has been on the DL since Aug. 7 with a left knee laceration. Rienzo (0-0, 5.23 ERA) is scheduled to throw 40 pitches for the Hammerheads.

Lastly, rookie right-hander Jose Urena -- who also went to the DL on Aug. 7 with a left knee contusion -- will throw his first bullpen session on Wednesday. He's 1-5 with a 5.11 ERA this season (11 appearances, nine starts).
