Moncada starts preparing for AFL action

NEW YORK -- Red Sox top prospect flew to Fort Myers, Fla., on Thursday to prepare for the Arizona Fall League.
Moncada was in the Red Sox's clubhouse Wednesday night to celebrate their American League East title. After striking out in nine consecutive at-bats, the 21-year-old did not receive another plate appearance since his last on Sept. 12 against Baltimore.
"Just felt like with the Arizona Fall League coming up, this was an opportunity to get him back to [Fort Myers] for a couple of days," Red Sox manager John Farrell said. "He'll report to instructional league to get some more consistent baseball activity, get some games down there before he reports to Arizona. I think the time he spent here was certainly beneficial to him, challenging in its own right. But this is an exciting young player that's got some learning to do and some development left."
The rookie was selected on the active Major League roster from Double-A Portland on Sept. 2. He went 4-for-19 (.211) with one walk, one RBI, a double and 12 strikeouts.
The Arizona Fall League games begin on Oct. 11. Moncada will travel to Arizona later this week.
